Modi government almost abandoned its intention to implement a uniform civil code in the country

The central government has almost given up the intention of implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country. In this regard, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made it clear in a way that the central government is not bringing a bill in this regard. Responding to the two-day discussion on the Constitution in the Rajya Sabha, he said that the Uniform Civil Code law will be implemented in BJP-ruled states. Amit Shah gave the example of Uttarakhand and said that the way the UCC has been implemented in Uttarakhand, it will be implemented in other BJP-ruled states on the same lines.

This means that one by one the governments of BJP-ruled states will get this bill passed in their respective assemblies. The BJP had promised in the recent Jharkhand assembly elections that if its government is formed, it will implement the Uniform Civil Code and keep the tribals out of it. A few days ago, when the law came into force in Uttarakhand, the Assam government had announced to bring a bill in its state based on the same draft. Interestingly, when the Uttarakhand law was made based on the recommendations of the Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai Committee, the members of the Law Commission also met with the people of that committee. At that time, it was being said that the Central Government would also bring a bill based on the same draft, but now it seems that the Central Government has backed down.
