The US deported nearly 3.5 million immigrants last year.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) removed 271,484 illegal immigrants from the country during the fiscal year ending September 30, 2024. According to a recently released annual report, the immigrants sent back included people from 200 different countries. This is the first time since 2014 that such a large number of immigrants have been sent back in a single year. According to ICE, 32% of the immigrants removed are people with a criminal record. President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to mass repatriate immigrants has been a constant criticism of President Joe Biden’s approach to immigration. However, ICE data shows that the Biden administration has taken consistent action to send illegal immigrants back to their respective countries. According to ICE, most of the immigrants sent back between October 1, 2023, and September 30, 2024, include immigrants who entered the United States illegally through the US-Mexico border. ICE Director Patrick Leichleitner said in this report that in the absence of the necessary resources and funds, we have worked continuously to secure the borders. Tom Homan, whom Trump has entrusted with leading his incoming administration, has said that he will need more funds from Congress to fulfill the promise made by the president-elect to remove illegal immigrants from the country. During an interview with a channel, he said that he will need at least one lakh beds to catch undocumented immigrants, while only 40 thousand beds are currently being funded. In addition, more ICE agents are needed. At present, the agency has around 6 thousand immigration enforcement officers. According to Homan, we want to arrest and deport as many immigrants as possible who are in the country illegally, for which we must have the necessary resources. According to the report, there are about 1.4 million immigrants who need a final order to be deported, but many of them cannot be sent back to their countries because the countries concerned are not ready to take them back or they can get relief under our current immigration system. In addition, more than 7.6 million immigrants have been brought under the deportation process, but these people are not in the custody of ICE. They will have to go through the immigration process to be deported.
