Protests in New York on Narendra Modi’s US visit
Protests took place in New York on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States for the session of the United Nations General Assembly. A large number of Sikhs, Kashmiris and people of other religions participated in this protest. The protesters condemned Narendra Modi’s involvement in the killings of freedom-loving Sikhs and others in other parts of the world, including India’s Jammu and Kashmir, Canada and the US. Across the barricade erected by the police, a separate protest of Sikhs in large numbers was advocating the creation of Khalistan.
There, some people blew Modi’s effigy. Some held placards reading “Modi: The face of Hindu terror”. Bhai Narinder Singh Khalsa, a panthak sevadar and member of Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar Committee, who came from Canada to attend the protest, said that the Modi government has killed many Sikh and Kashmiri separatist activists, whom they termed as terrorists and extremists. including the shooting death of Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijhar, a Sikh activist in Canada and the attempted assassination of Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, a Sikh activist in America.
A group of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians at the protest highlighted the ways in which they say Modi’s rule has normalized a fiery brand of Hindu supremacy in India, known as “Hindutv” or “Hinduta”. and is said to have facilitated violence against ethnic and religious minorities. The protesters raised slogans in favor of independence.
