Tensions between the US and Iran have reached a new high. According to a report in the state-run Tehran Times, Iran has refused to bow to Donald Trump’s bombing threats and is preparing its underground missile centers to attack US-related sites if necessary.
According to reports, Tehran has braced itself to respond to any possible US attack. The developments come as tensions remain high between the two countries over the nuclear deal. Trump recently gave Iran a two-month ultimatum to sign a new deal or face military action.
The issue of the nuclear deal between the US and Iran has been a central topic of global diplomacy and regional security for decades. The Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was signed in 2015 by the US and Iran, Russia and Germany. It aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear program.
In return, the US promised to ease economic sanctions on Iran. The deal remained in effect until Trump pulled the US out of it in 2018. Trump said it was not enough to completely prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Trump called it the worst deal ever, claiming it failed to curb Iran’s missile program and regional influence. Iran has since surpassed the uranium enrichment limit and is now producing nearly weapons-grade uranium, something only nuclear-armed countries can do. Trump recently sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in which he proposed talks. But at the same time, he warned that if an agreement is not reached, Iran will have to face a fierce bombardment. The US has deployed B-2 stealth bombers at the Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean, which are capable of destroying Iran’s underground nuclear bases.
Iran, calling Trump’s proposal a threatening attitude, refused direct talks. President Massoud Pajhwokian said that the possibility of indirect talks through Oman is open. But due to Trump’s pressure policy, no issue can be resolved. Meanwhile, Iran’s hardline Revolutionary Guard released a video showing an underground missile site. It contains missiles that can target American bases and Israel. The Iranian Observer shared this video on X.
Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf warned that an attack on his regime would be like a spark on a powder keg in the region. Iran also indicated that it could attack American sites such as Diego Garcia. This situation could increase regional instability, especially when Israel and Iran are at odds over the Gaza and Lebanon disputes. The tension between Iran and the US points to several possible outcomes. If Trump chooses the path of military action, it could spark a major conflict in the Middle East, which could involve Israel, Saudi Arabia and other US allies.
Iran could change its nuclear policy and start a race to build nuclear weapons, ignoring Khamenei’s edict, which it says is necessary to protect its existence. Indirect talks could lead to a limited agreement, but Trump’s tough conditions and Iran’s stubborn attitude make it difficult. Iran’s economy is already struggling with sanctions and its currency, the rial, is depreciating. In such a situation, Iran wants to strengthen its position by showing military power. On the other hand, Trump’s strategy is to bend Iran through ‘maximum pressure’, but this policy could backfire on the US. It is believed that for Iran to bow completely to the US would be suicidal, as it could jeopardize its own regional credibility. This latest confrontation between Iran and the US is a challenge to global security.
