A Delhi court has convicted former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in a murder case related to the 1984 Sikh riots. Earlier, special judge Kaveri Baweja was to pronounce the verdict on Friday but had deferred her verdict till February 12. In January, the court had deferred the verdict after the prosecution sought time to present detailed arguments on certain points. The case relates to the killing of two persons in Saraswati Vihar area during the 1984 Sikh riots. The court had reserved its verdict after hearing the final arguments in the case related to the murder of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh on November 1, 1984. A case was initially registered in this regard at Punjabi Bagh police station but later the Special Investigation Team took over the investigation. On December 16, 2021, the court framed charges against Kumar and filed a “prima facie” case against him. According to the prosecution, the mob, armed with deadly weapons, committed large-scale looting, arson and destruction of Sikh property to avenge the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The prosecution alleged that the mob entered the house and killed Jaswant and his son, looted their belongings and set their house on fire. According to the court hearing the case, “there is sufficient prima facie evidence to determine that Kumar was not only a participant but also led the mob.”
